Is Working From Home An Option For You?

When you become a mother, all of your priorities tend to shift to make way for baby. Work especially is one area of your life that might not take a front seat anymore, as you now want a career that can be more flexible with your needs at home. Research has shown that now more than ever, women in the 25 – 54 age bracket mainly work part time, due to the rising costs of daycare and so women are searching for an alternative.

If you’ve ever wondered about the possibility of working from home, there are more ways than ever to do so, thanks to the wonder of the world wide web. Here are just a few suggestions for how to make a living from home, giving you the freedom to be both a mother and a self-employed income earner.

Mystery Shopper

This is a sweet gig for the mother who likes to spend her time cruising the shops with her pram in tow, and it’s a great excuse to get out of the house too. Mystery shoppers are allocated stores as assignments and must shop around acting as a customer, and then report back on what the experience was like.

Freelance Writer

If good grammar is your forte and you enjoy the written word, you might have a promising career as a freelance writer. There are plenty of freelancing portals available online with advertisements looking for new talent, but be prepared to submit a sample piece of writing for assessment first.

Online Assistant

Thanks to the internet, online assistant jobs are hugely popular at the moment. These can work especially well if you’re interested in putting in some hours at night, thanks to the time zone differences depending on where potential employers might be. All you need is basic administration skills, a good internet connection, and some free time set aside as your employer requires.

Make it Work For You

While it might sound simple enough to get some work done while the baby takes a nap, keep in mind that you need time for relaxation as well. As your baby gets older, you might even consider having them in part time care during the week, so you can place more of a focus on building your career without wearing yourself too thin. For more advice on your changing role as a new mother, we’re constantly adding ideas to our Peachymama blog.
