Lactation Consultants Offer Hope For New Moms

Lactation Consultants Offer Hope For New Moms

We know expecting mums think breastfeeding should be the most natural thing in the world. The truth is though that there are many factors that can lead to breastfeeding difficulties – from premature births to health conditions such as reflux.

Once you have your baby at home, it is not uncommon to discover that your little one is not feeding properly – and so the struggle to find a comfortable and effective way to breastfeed begins. In these instances, a lactation consultant can be a real life saver.

What Is a Lactation Consultant?

Lactation consultants are dedicated to assisting breastfeeding mums succeed in their infant nursing goals. They provide a safe, stress free environment where mums (and families in some cases) can come together to learn how to breastfeed properly.

Lactation Consultants are certified specialists who assist with lactation management. They are not counsellors, but are health professionals who hold an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) qualification. In Australia they work in private practice, as part of child health services, or in hospitals.

They are focused by providing effective breast-feeding instruction for mums who are struggling with breastfeeding.

Although many mums get lucky with a baby who latches on immediately with little issue, we know that there is a significant number who don’t share this experience. If this is you, a lactation consultant will help you with comfortable positioning, as well as showing you ways to encourage your baby latch on. You can also learn to read baby’s cues and gain confidence in your breastfeeding capabilities.

Breast is Best

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that breastfeeding provides young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. It is recommended that mums breastfeed exclusively for the first six months and can continue to breastfeed for up to two years with complementary foods. It is up to you how long you wish to continue breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Clothes

Finding a comfort level with breastfeeding is not just about positioning and latch. You also have to come up with a regime that suits you. Having the proper clothing such as breastfeeding tops, nursing dresses and nursing bras will make breastfeeding throughout the day easier with quicker access and less exposure during feedings.

Proper nightwear such as nursing pyjamas make that groggy, disorienting night feeding easier as well. You can also learn to be more comfortable breastfeeding in public with the use of a breastfeeding cover.

At Peachymama, we understand the needs of nursing mothers, and have the best collection of breastfeeding clothing, including stunning nursing tops and dresses to make your breastfeeding experience a beautiful one.
