Breastfeeding Can Lessen The Risk Of Diabetes In Both Mom And Baby

Studies have shown that children who were breastfed had a reduced risk of obesity and diabetes later in life. This is compared to those children who were not breast fed or were breast fed for less than six months. Making breastfeeding even more appealing, studies have found that it can also reduce the risk for Type 2 diabetes in mums.

Children’s Studies

It multiple studies revealed that children who were fed breast milk for at least six months were 15 to 30 percent less likely to have obesity issues as adults or teens. In fact, each month a child is breastfed will lead to an additional 4 percent reduction in the risk of having weight issues according to the 2012 Pediatrics Journal. The same study also saw a 30 percent reduction in the occurrence of Type 1 diabetes mellitus in babies who were fed breast milk exclusively for at least three months. A series of 21 different articles were analyzed for results regarding Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The analysis agreed with findings that children who were given solely breast milk for the first six months of life lowered the risk of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. In fact, the analysis recommended breast milk be used to supplement solids until the age of two. Breast milk contains bioactive substances which assist in immune maturation while promoting satiety.

Mom’s Studies

You might be surprised to hear that when you choose to breastfeed your baby you are not only reducing his or her risk of diabetes, but yours as well. A study that took over 20 years to complete discovered that mums reduced their risk by 15 percent, and that risk was reduced incrementally the more children they had – a mother who has two children would see a 30 percent reduction. The information was collected from 704 women in a heart health study which revealed further information including the good news regarding diabetes.

Breastfeeding is even more important for moms who had gestational diabetes as they are four times more likely to suffer from Type 2 diabetes later in life. Breastfeeding reduces their risk for metabolic syndrome from 44 percent to 86 percent. This is good news for both you and your baby.
